According to the Minusca, new clashes between enemy militias have killed 23 people this Saturday, September 14 in Birao, a city in northeastern Central Africa.

In the extreme north-east of the country, Birao had already been fighting in early September after the death of the son of the sultan of the city. In the hands of the Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (FPRC) since 2014, the city was then taken by the Movement of Central African Liberators for Justice (MLCJ). Saturday new clashes were engaged.

Several sources speak of an FPRC offensive to retake the city. The latter denies, claiming to have fought back against a new attack from its positions on the outskirts of Birao. A report from Minusca, the United Nations Mission in Central Africa, reports 23 fighters killed and more than a dozen wounded. A blue helmet was also slightly wounded, said the spokesman of the UN mission.

In the field, aid workers were unable to assist the more than 13,000 displaced on Saturday, as fighting forced them to remain caulked. A humanitarian cargo ship was due to arrive from Bangui, but had to be postponed.

The spokesman of the government, Ange-Maxime Kazagui, currently abroad, regrets this resumption of fighting. He calls for an end to these clashes based on ethnic manipulation, he said. " It is not acceptable for those who claim to represent the people to continue fighting, " he insists. The minister calls for the various actors of the armed groups to lay down their arms in order to allow the sending of humanitarian assistance to the civilian population.
