Police ready to respond to pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong on September 8, 2019. RFI / Stéphane Lagarde

Despite the withdrawal of the extradition bill Wednesday, September 4, protesters continue to call for an independent commission of inquiry into police abuses in Hong Kong. While the government assures that the police can do it internally, a former police officer says that it is rather impunity that reigns in the ranks of the Hong Kong police.

This 34-year-old former police officer joined the Hong Kong police in 2014 with images of his youth as a heroic and dedicated police. But the mentality he discovered among his co-religionists was quite different: " What I saw is an intense hatred. It is not that they are especially for the Chinese government, but most police officers see protesters as rioters, who disturb the social order, they take them for losers. "

" They violate all the laws of Hong Kong "

When he looks at the images of the current confrontations between police officers and protesters , he notes that the instructions learned during his training seem to be flouted. " They do not control their weapons or their emotions. They violate all the laws of Hong Kong and all the rules of the police. And they are convinced that they will not be prosecuted. "

This is what the protesters are now claiming: that these abuses be examined and, if necessary, punished .
