JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Guards rushed towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and removed him from a platform where he stood during an election rally in southern Israel on Tuesday, after sirens sounded to warn of a possible rocket attack from Gaza.

According to the Hebrew channel «13», the sirens sounded in the city of Ashdod and Ashkelon, northern Gaza Strip, after which Netanyahu was evacuated to a safe place, during the election rally.

Israeli media official Shimon Aran said in a tweet on his official Twitter account that the head of the northern Gaza Strip city of Ashkelon decided to open shelters and bunkers after firing warning sirens on the background of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.

Alarm sirens were fired on Tuesday evening in Israeli towns and settlements adjacent to the northern Gaza Strip, after the Iron Dome monitored a rocket fire from the Gaza Strip towards Ashkelon and Ashdod.
