Entertainment on the bus, competition, a way to hang out or just a moment's escape. The reasons for playing computer, television or mobile games are many and it remains popular among young people. Although it has actually gone down a bit in recent years.

- You get the feeling when you talk about young people's media usage that everything is increasing, but it is not. The gambling has actually gone down, even though it is not a dramatic reduction, says Ulf Dalquist, an analyst at the State Media Council.

Girls stop earlier

It is especially among boys that the gambling has gone down. 16 percentage points among 9-12 year olds and 9 percentage points in both the group 13-16 year olds and 17-18 year olds. This compares with 2014 and when it comes to the question of playing digital at all.

However, on the whole, gambling is popular, and despite the decline among boys, there are major differences in relation to girls.

- This is mainly because girls stop playing while boys continue on into their teens. So it has been a long time and we also see differences in how much they play, and what games, says Ulf Dalquist.

For the first time, the proportion of girls who play higher in an age category is the youngest. But then it is about those who answered that they are playing at some point.

- If you weigh all the pieces, the gender differences have become larger and are also noticeable earlier, says Ulf Dalquist

It is not least evident in those who state that they play more than three hours a day, where the proportion of boys is clearly higher over the entire age range, even among the younger ones.

And there are also differences in how they look at their gambling.

- Girls are much more self-critical about their media use and think more than boys that they use media too much, says Ulf Dalquist.
