JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Pro-Iranian factions fired rockets from Syria into Israel on Monday, but landed before reaching the Israeli side, the Israeli army said.

"Early in the morning (Monday) a number of rockets were fired from Syrian territory towards Israel, all of which failed" to reach the other side, the Israeli army said in a statement.

"The rockets were fired from the outskirts of Damascus by members of a Shiite militia linked to the Quds Force," the statement said.

The Israeli statement came after it was reported that sites belonging to armed Iraqi factions and forces loyal to Iran and the Syrian regime at dawn on Monday shelling from unknown drones, believed to be Israeli, in the city of Albukamal in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria against what it says are Iranian and Hezbollah targets, but rarely recognizes them, vowing to prevent Iran, its main enemy, from establishing a military presence in Syria.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Israel was behind the recent attacks in Albukamal.
