At least 18 people were injured in an incident during a Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka when riders lost control of two elephants. The animals ran to the crowd. Presumably, they were frightened by the noise of fireworks. Zoodefenders associate the aggressive behavior of elephants with the atmosphere at the festival. Animals dressed in holiday dresses are forced to take part in the procession amid the noise and smoke from the pyrotechnics.
