The new European Commission will have almost as many women as men, respectively 13 and 14, a first in the history of this institution. Former Minister of Armies Sylvia Goulard will represent France.

THE ESSENTIAL

Ursula von der Leyen said yes! The future German President of the European Commission has approved the list of 13 women and 14 politicians who will form her team. Each member country of the European Union sends a representative to the institution, with the exception of the United Kingdom which is currently in Brexit. The former minister of the armies of Edouard Philippe's first government, Sylvie Goulard, will represent France.

There will be 13 women and 14 men, almost parity! This is a first in the history of the European Commission. For comparison, the previous team had 19 men for only 8 women. Mission accomplished for Ursula von der Leyen who set herself the goal of achieving parity in her new team.

The European Parliament has to hear all members of the new committee between 30 September and 8 October. The process will end with the vote of inauguration of the new Brussels executive on 22 October, during the plenary session in Strasbourg, before the new Commission takes office on 1 November.
