Rotavirus is a form of gastrointestinal virus that can lead to, among other things, vomiting and diarrhea, which can seriously affect the health of young children. Before any vaccine was available, the Public Health Authority estimated that over 2,000 children were admitted to hospitals around the country each year, due to the virus.

- We have about one hundred days of care per year for all types of stomach ailments in the Kronoberg Region. We believe that half is due to rotavirus. The vaccine provides very good protection so we think we will halve the days, says pediatrician Anna Bärtås.

Is given in the mouth

The vaccine is a weakened virus that the child gets in his mouth. Common side effects are mild stomach upset, with stomach ache and some diarrhea. But there is also a small but measurably increased risk of so-called intestinal invasion.

- That's when the gut comes into itself. If you have a child who gets very sore in the stomach at intervals, you should contact health care.

Socio-economic profit

In addition to fewer children being admitted to hospitals, the Public Health Agency expects fewer visits by stomach-ill children at health centers and emergency rooms. In addition, fewer parents will take out their father's days. Therefore, a socio-economic profit of SEK 120 million is expected each year for the entire country.

- Of course, it is important to count on finances, but the biggest benefits are for the children who do not need to get sick, says Anna Bärtås.
