Profiles like Kim Kardashian, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker are some of the international celebrities who have had children through surrogacy.

Cristiano Ronaldo's twins were born by a surrogate mother from the US and then flew to Madrid to meet their father. The event was noticed in the media and over the years celebrities who have had children through surrogates have created headlines.

Even in Sweden, Swedish parents who have children with the help of surrogate mothers have told about their experiences in the media and it is usually the parents' and the industry's perspective that is heard.

The children are born abroad, since surrogacy is not allowed in Swedish healthcare, and the surrogate mothers can come from a number of different countries such as Georgia, Ukraine, Thailand and the USA.

More people choose surrogate

Staffan Sörenson is a lawyer and co-owner of a surrogate agency. He has ten years of experience in the industry and believes that 2018 will be the year when the number of children born by surrogate mothers becomes more than the number of international adoptions in Sweden.

- We had 100 children away last year. And I think we end up with 150-180 children this year.

One of the reasons why surrogate motherhood is about the adoptions is that the adoptions to Sweden have dropped drastically as several countries have tightened the legislation.

But celebrities and international profiles may also have influenced the view of surrogacy.

- There are some well-known couples and it is clear that this is important. That is talked about, says Staffan Sörenson.
