The oak will be cut down sometime in September.

The County Administrative Board's tree experts have determined that the tree will not survive, mostly because of the tree's exposed location.

- The tree has taken a beating from standing in the middle of a highway - it is not optimal with the asphalt, the salt in the winter and the exhaust gases, says Anders Jordeby, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

But the tree has also been vandalized - someone sawed it with a chainsaw and it has been fired at the tree.

The Swedish Transport Administration notes that a dead tree so close to the highway poses a safety risk to passersby.

- Right now there is no danger, but it can start loosening branches and it is not good, says Anders Jordeby.

Not to be replaced

The tree, which is over 200 years old, has been adorned in its place in the middle strip since E4 got its new draw in 2007. The oak will not be replaced by a new tree.

The downpour will occur sometime in September, early morning or late evening.

- It has to be when there is little traffic, because we have to turn off a lane in each direction, says Anders Jordeby.

"Well check in where the oak has been"

When SVT Uppsala reported that the oak had become a viral landmark in 2015, Helena Fröhler from Sandviken was one of those who checked in at the oak several times. She is disappointed when she hears that the tree is being cut down already in September.

Helena Fröhler always checks in at the oak.

- Ah, then I can not pass anything more. I think it is very sad that it should be removed because it has, like, become a thing there. But at the same time, if it is absolutely impossible to do anything to save the oak, then it must be done, she says.

Last August she checked in at the oak at E4, and she has done this every time she passed the place on her way to Arlanda in recent years.

- It started with a Facebook check-in and then it was almost like a forced thought when you went by, she says and laughs.

Where will you check in next time you go to Arlanda?

- Where the tree may have stood? If there is any such place. Otherwise, one may well create one as we pass by.
