All Spaniards in the Bahamas are safe and, although some have "lost everything" because of Hurricane Dorian , there has been no regret for personal injury, said the ambassador of Spain in Jamaica, Josep Bosch, also in charge of that archipelago .

In a telephone conversation from Nassau, the Bahamian capital, Bosch said that from the Spanish embassy in Kingston and from the office of the honorary consul in the Bahamas, Arantxa Klonaris, all Spaniards have been located in Dorian-affected areas, which It was about twenty . There are 149 registered Spaniards in the Spanish consulate in Bahamas, but it is estimated that residents can reach 300.

Bosch said that when he says that "everyone" is safe it is because, if there had been any more Spaniards in those areas of the Bahamas without the Spanish authorities knowing, their relatives would have made some management to know their whereabouts, but there has not been Nothing similar when it is almost a week since Dorian arrived.

The ambassador is scheduled to meet with the Bahamas Foreign Minister next Monday to learn about the needs of the Atlantic archipelago to recover from the disaster caused by Dorian with a view to sending aid or rescue equipment.

Dorian made landfall on Elbow Cay, a small island in this island country, last Sunday with winds of 259 kilometers / hour , which falls into the top category of the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Then he went to Abaco and finally arrived in Grand Bahama, on which he stayed for almost two days. The last death toll from Dorian in the Bahamas is 43, although it is assumed that it will increase greatly as rescue and rescue work progresses.

The destruction of homes and infrastructure in areas punished by Dorian, which on Saturday remained a hurricane and threatening the northeastern United States and Canada, has been described as "massive." The ambassador mentioned the case of two Spanish women of Cuban origin married to Bahamians and residents of Abaco who lost everything and are now in Florida (USA) with their relatives. He also spoke of three Spaniards working in a solar panel company that the hurricane surprised in Freeport, in Grand Bahama.

One of them has already traveled to Spain and the other two are in Nassau, where at first glance, according to the ambassador, no damage can be seen.

According to Bosch, as soon as it was learned that Bahamas was in Dorian's trajectory the Spanish diplomats in Jamaica and the honorary consul in Bahamas contacted those registered consularly and recommended that they evacuate if they were in danger zones, in addition to offering them help to leave where they were from

After the hurricane passed they contacted them again to see how they were. In addition, they looked for those who were on tourism or business.

Bosch said only eleven Spaniards from the devastated areas agreed to leave and are already in Spain, Florida or Nassau .

Spain included about twenty Spaniards and their families residing in the devastated areas on the evacuation lists. Among those who did not want to leave the places where they reside is María Fernanda Martínez Núñez, who coordinates in the Abaco area the emergency plan implemented by the embassy in Jamaica, for which she volunteered. Martínez Núñez participates in rescue and relief work in Ábaco.
