Canan Kaftancioglu was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for "terrorist propaganda" and "insulting the head of state".

Canan Kaftancioglu, head of the opposition CHP (Social Democrat) party for Istanbul province, " was sentenced to a total of nine years and eight months in prison, " a party official said. She was convicted on five different counts, based mainly on tweets posted several years ago: "terrorist propaganda", "insulting the head of state", "insulting an official", "insulting Republic of Turkey "and" incitement to hatred ".

The politician, whose trial was well attended in Turkey and abroad, risked up to 17 years in prison. Canan Kaftancioglu is presented as the architect of the successful campaigns of Ekrem Imamoglu, who defeated Recep Tayyip Erdogan's candidate in Istanbul in March, then in June after the cancellation of the first ballot under controversial conditions.

As each prison sentence, taken individually, is less than five years, Ms. Kaftancioglu will not be imprisoned pending her appeal trial, which is expected within six months, according to the CHP official.

Throughout the case, she denounced a " political trial " aimed, according to her and her supporters, to punish her for her role in the victory of the opposition candidate at the municipal elections in Istanbul.
