A couple of weeks ago, the Data Inspectorate fined SEK 200,000 in fines to Skellefteå municipality for violating the Data Protection Regulation. These were the first sanction fees decided under the GDPR.

So the High School Board in Skellefteå has decided to appeal the fine.

- It is important for the whole of School Sweden how this is to be interpreted, says Felicia Lundmark (S) chair of the high school board.

The presence of registered students with a camera

The face recognition trial took place at Anderstorpsskolan in Skellefteå for a few weeks last December and included 22 students. Each time one of the students entered the classroom, their presence was recorded by a camera.

Although the high school board stated that the students gave their consent to participate in the project, the Data Inspectorate believes that the handling of sensitive personal data violated GDPR.
