04 September 2019The House of Commons has given the first vote in favor of the Benn motion which requires the government to ask the EU for an extension of the 3-month Brexit to 31 January to avoid a no-deal exit, ie without agreement, on 31 October . 329 MPs voted in favor of the motion while 300 votes against.

The motion now passes to the committees for possible amendments and will be put to the vote again. In case of new approval, the motion will pass to the House of Lords. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who will present the government's motion with the request for early elections on October 15th, will again take the floor in the House of Commons. According to the voting declarations of the last few hours, the opposition parties, including the Labor party, should vote against and therefore reject the motion which must be approved by two thirds of the House to be approved.

The motion, which represents a new defeat for Johnson, is promoted by the opposition and a group of Tory rebels (meanwhile expelled) to try to impose a postponement of Brexit in the absence of an agreement with the EU at the deadline of October 31st.
