Nicholas Soames was one of the 21 Conservative members who went against the party line in Tuesday's vote on Brexit. The punishment was that he must not be a candidate for a seat in parliament for the party he has been a member of since 1982. The 73-year-old politician declared that he had no plans to stand in the next election.

Soames defied the prime minister because he did not want to see a contractless Brexit and accused Johnson of deliberately forcing a new election.

Churchill's grandson

British media now talk about the historical irony of the fact that Soames is being barred from pursuing a political career in his party. Nicholas Soames is the grandson of the famous statesman and former prime minister Winston Churchill. Soames mother Mary was the youngest of his five children.

Granddaughter Soames made a career as a stockbroker before being elected to parliament in 1997 where he worked on defense issues. He supported David Cameron's candidacy as party leader and was a Brexit opponent.

Nicholas Soames has gone three times against the party line during his political career. Now he defied the Prime Minister who paid tribute to his world-renowned grandfather.

Admires Churchill

Boris Johnson is one of Winston Churchill's admirers. In the biography of Churchill that he wrote in 2014, he calls him "Britain's greatest statesman ever".

Soames lived in the shadow of his famous relative and never reached the absolute heights of British politics.

Unaware of the greatness

An anecdote circulating in the media is about the little five-year-old boy Nicholas who, unaware of Sir Winston's greatness, asked the question to his grandfather:

- Grandpa, is it true that you are the most powerful man in the world?

Churchill should have replied:

- Yes, but get out of here now.
