The deputy of the presidential majority Cédric Villani, a mathematician with the Fields medal, announced Wednesday that he will run for mayor of Paris in 2020 against the candidate officially dubbed by his party.

Excluded from the nomination, Cédric Villani, 45 years old, emblematic figure of the majority, assumed his dissent, equated to a "thunderclap in Macronie" by the daily Le Monde and the presidential party La République en Marche ( LREM) immediately "regretted".

" I announce to you, this September 4, that I decided to be a candidate for the next election of the Mayor of Paris, " he told the many journalists and activists gathered in a Parisian brewery, ending a false suspense.

The mathematician was turned down in July by the National Committee of Investiture of LREM in favor of Benjamin Griveaux, former spokesman of the government, and has been constantly denouncing a " flawed " procedure.

" Before the summer, I took part in a process of designation which I could note the unsuitability, " he repeated. " I was able to measure the limits of the functioning of the political apparatus that we denounced not long ago ".

This dissident candidacy is an undeniable blow for the presidential party which, with its score of 33% to European women in the capital, hopes to delight the mayor of the capital to the Socialist Anne Hidalgo in March.

The mathematician, all smiles, wearing his famous laundress and his usual spider on the shoulder, he seemed to have neglected in recent weeks in favor of a less eccentric appearance, promised Wednesday night a campaign marked by " benevolence and freedom , never in the attack but always to gather ".

Cédric Villani ginned some points of his project, promising an ecology " served by science and technology ", and assured to want to make Paris " the international metropolis of reference of a human and sustainable development ".
