World No.2 Ashleigh Barty qualified Friday for the round of 16 of the US Open by eliminating Greek Maria Sakkari (29) 7-5, 6-3.
In the next round, the Australian who can take the world's throne to Naomi Osaka at the end of the tournament, will face the Chinese Qiang Wang (18th) or the French Fiona Ferro (74th).
Barty, this year's winner at Roland-Garros, had already reached the round of 16 of the US Open last year, his best result to date in this tournament.
