American director Richard Linklater, renowned for his ambitious and offbeat projects, has announced that his next shoot will last twenty years.

The filmmaker had already shot his film "Boyhood" (2014) intermittently over a period of twelve years, which allowed his main actor, Ellar Coltrane, to age naturally between the age of five and his entry into the world. university. In 2015, the film earned an Oscar for actress Patricia Arquette.

Richard Linklater, 59, wants to break his record for the adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical "Merrily We Roll Along", which tells the story of a composer who leaves Broadway to produce Hollywood films.

"I saw + Merrily + for the first time in the 1980s and fell in love, I can not imagine a better place to spend the next twenty years of my life than in a musical Sondheim," says the director in a statement sent to AFP on Friday.

"I do not engage in this multi-year adventure lightly, but it seems to me to be the best - and perhaps the only - way to do justice to this story in the cinema," he continues.

The original musical begins in Hollywood before going back in time, which means that Mr. Linklater should wait twenty years before filming the opening scenes of his film.

"The most ambitious thing about this extraordinary project we are undertaking with Richard Linklater is that we have the audacity to imagine that there will be another planet in twenty years," Blumhouse studios, which produce the film.

Beanie Feldstein ("Booksmart"), Ben Platt ("The Hit Girls") and Blake Jenner ("Everybody Wants Some !!") will be the stars.

Linklater became known to the general public with films like "Slacker" or his trilogy starring Ethan Hawke and French Julie Delpy, started in 1995 with "Before Sunrise" and completed in 2013 with "Before Midnight".

The Texas director also revealed the young Matthew McConaughey in 1993, in his film "Rebellious Generation".
