Tokyo has been named the safest city in the world this Thursday by the Intelligence Unit of The Economist , an index that classifies the ability of cities to handle from climate disasters to cyber attacks.

Singapore ranks second after the capital of Japan, while another Japanese metropolis, Osaka , ranks third, the same three cities that led the index in 2015 and 2017.

This year, the 60-city index aimed to reflect the concept of "urban resilience," which is the ability of cities to absorb and recover from shocks , the researchers explained.

  • Investigators said the safest cities scored high on access to quality medical care, cybersecurity teams, community-based police patrols and good disaster planning.

"The investigation highlights how the different types of security are completely intertwined," said Naka Kondo , editor of the Tokyo-based report.

Although European cities had a good result in the area of health, they had problems with digital security, in terms of the ability of citizens to freely use the Internet and other digital channels without fear of privacy violations or identity theft.

First-tier cities in digital security scored high on citizen awareness of digital threats and cybersecurity equipment, resulting in low levels of infection by computer viruses and malware .

" London is the only European city in the top 10 of this category, " said Irene Mia, global editorial director of the Intelligence Unit at The Economist.

Lagos (Nigeria), Caracas (Venezuela), Yangon (Myanmar), Karachi (Pakistan) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) were the five least safe cities in the world, according to the index.
