France's Axel Clerget (-90kg) won the bronze medal at the World Judo Championships in Tokyo on Thursday, one year from the 2020 Olympic Games.

At 32, Clerget climbs for the second time on a world podium after his bronze medal last year.

Defeated in the quarter-finals by Noel Van't End of the Netherlands, he won his gold medal game against Azerbaijan Mammadali Mehdiyev and Marcus Nyman of Sweden on ippon two seconds from the end of his fight for third place .

He brings France its fourth medal of the week in Japan, after the gold medals of Clarisse Agbegnenou (-63 kg) and Marie-Eve Gahié (-70 kg) and bronze Margaux Pinot (-70 kg).
