The 31-year-old striker Robert Lewandowski has extended his contract with Bayern Munich until 2023, said Thursday the club champion of Germany.

The Pole, who was linked to Bayern until 2021, had arrived in 2014 from Dortmund.

With Bayern, he played in all competitions 246 games and scored 197 goals, becoming the third striker in the history of the club, behind the legendary Gerd Müller (508) and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (217).

By adding his goals with Dortmund, he scored 207 times in the Bundesliga, making him the top foreign striker of all time in the German league.

"Robert is in my opinion the best forward center of the world and for years a pillar of our team," said Rummenigge, now boss of the club that has won the last seven championships in Germany.

"FC Bayern has become my homeland," said Lewandowski in a statement from the club: "I am confident that we will do great things in the years to come." FC Bayern is one of the three biggest clubs in the world. We have an amazing team and I'm proud to be part of this club. "

Until last season, the ambitious striker had yet fondled the idea of a transfer to Real Madrid, which had fueled some tensions with Bayern, but the opportunity has never presented for him.

After winning five Bundesliga, two German cups and three-time top scorer in Bayern, Lewandowski says his goal now is to win the Champions League.

He has never been able to do this since he was in Bavaria, since Bayern won his last "big cup" in 2013. That year, he played in Dortmund and lost the final against Munich.

In recent weeks, he had not hesitated to call loudly for his leaders a strengthening of the team, in order to finally compete with the English and Spanish clubs that monopolize the supreme trophy since 2014.
