It is only when camera surveillance is supported by other efforts that increase the risk of being detected that the crime goes down, according to research by, among others, Eric L. Piza of the City University of New York.

"In principle, if the police have more cameras than they can effectively monitor, the technology does not provide the expected benefit," he says in an interview on the Crime Prevention Council's website.

No statistics on utility

There are still no statistics showing how effective the camera surveillance has been on Ågatan in Linköping.

"We know for sure that we have benefited from it in some cases, in abuse cases, but we have not done any detailed follow-up," says Thomas Redlund, regional director for the camera introduction.
