Richard Gasquet, 36th in the world, was eliminated in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday by Italian Matteo Berrettini (25th) 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
The 33-year-old Frenchman, however, arrived at Flushing Meadows with substantial confidence after reaching his first semifinal in Masters 1000 in Cincinnati since 2013.
Berrettini will face in the next round the winner of the match between Australian Jordan Thompson (55th) and Portuguese Joao Sousa (44th).
