Renowned Spanish chef José Andrés has been denounced in a New York court, along with the company with which he operates in Manhattan with the Adriá brothers, for allegedly not paying the salary stipulated by law in the popular culinary space Mercado Little Spain, in Manhattan.

The claim, to which Efe has had access, was presented by one of the establishment's workers, Tina Braunstein, who argues that the company of José Andrés y los Adriá has not paid extra hours as marked by the law of the state of Nueva York

As an example, the document states that the complainant was paid $ 15.55 an hour for more than two extra hours that worked a specific day in April, while the legislation stipulates that every extra hour must be paid at $ 17.50 .

"José Andrés is known in the world for his humanitarian efforts. In fact, in 2018, he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize," recalls the text of the complaint.

"Unfortunately, Andrés has invested more effort in feeding people around the world than his own employees in Mercado Little Spain (...), which systematically pays salaries below the established minimum," argues the document, presented before the courts. Monday.

Braunstein asks in the complaint for the payment of overtime that he has not received, an amount that is not specified, in addition to the cost of legal representation and other damages.

The complainant's lawyer, Maimon Kirschenbaum, known for defending the right of workers in the hospitality sector, said "humanitarian efforts should start at home. No one in New York or anywhere should work for wages below the minimum settled down".

For its part, a spokesman for Mercado Little Spain assured Efe that the company takes "these charges" very seriously, since "it works hard to provide its employees with a supportive and safe environment."

"We firmly believe that we pay all our employees properly and will vigorously defend any contrary claim. We are very proud of our employees and our entire team in New York," he added.

Mercado Little Spain, located in the colossal urban project Hudson Yards, opened its doors last March and has become one of the most popular places to enjoy Spanish cuisine in the Big Apple.

Of more than 3,000 square meters, the project, headed by Andrés with the support of Albert and Ferrán Adriá, has 15 stalls, two bars, three restaurants and two stores that have the capacity to serve about 5,000 people a day.
