The big market of the second city of Ivory Coast was ravaged the flames in the night from Monday to Tuesday August 27, without making a victim.

It is 2am on Tuesday, when the fire invades part of the Bouaké market in central Côte d'Ivoire. Very quickly, the flames spread. More than a hundred gendarmes, soldiers and firefighters are mobilized to fight the fire and secure the scene. It will finally be necessary to wait around 9h so that the police can extinguish everything. In total, one third of the eight to nine hectares of the market burned.

The fire did not kill or wound anyone. But the material damage is important: many shops went up in smoke. Some vendors who came during the night were able to save some of their merchandise, while others lost everything. It is the market of onions, mainly devoted to the sale of onions or even of shea butter which has been touched.

Aware, the mayor of Bouaké, Nicolas Djibo, quickly went on the spot. He first met the victims. Then announced to be ready to receive them in the coming days to accompany them and determine possible compensation.

The start of the poultry area caught fire, but this area did not burn completely.

The origin of this fire is not known at the moment. After the first findings on the spot, the mayor announced the upcoming opening of an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.

This is not the first time this market is a victim of flames. It had already burned in 1998. Since then, it had not been rebuilt, but replaced by small shops in juxtaposed boxes. And before this new disaster, a reconstruction project was under study.
