President Macron announced, on the sidelines of the G7 summit held in Biarritz, that he had reached a compromise with the United States on the GAFA tax, a new tax voted by the French Parliament that has provoked anger and threats from Donald Trump on the importation of hexagonal wine. Is this a success for Paris?

Given the changing mood of the White House leader, who did not clearly express his approval during the joint press conference held with his French counterpart, we will remain cautious about the real scope of this agreement.

But in the immediate future, French winemakers have enough to push a big "phew" of relief. They export every year for 1.6 billion euros of bottles in the United States, bottles that Donald Trump wanted to impose 100% to protest the GAFA tax.

To prevent it from triggering this formidable sanction, the Bercy and Elysee teams spent a lot of time explaining the ins and outs of this tax, set at 3% of the turnover of all companies whose global digital sales are greater than 750 million euros.

Bruno Le Mayor received his American counterpart at his holiday home. They handed over the cutlery to a posh restaurant on the biarrote coast. And the president can announce that the tax will be applied as planned. It is expected to bring in around 400 million euros this year.

The tax will in fact be applied until a similar arrangement is found at the international level , within the framework of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). At this point, Bercy will refund any overpayment to the companies concerned.
