There is still a crisis on the housing front for the new students coming to Uppsala. Uppsala remains in the red list in the Swedish Student Union (SFS) annual housing report. This means that students cannot be offered a first-hand contract within the first half of the year.

- Unfortunately, it's boring. The University is expanding and will launch seven new programs at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Uppsala's largest housing agency has 3.5 years of queuing time, so unfortunately you cannot guarantee housing during the first term, which makes it complicated, says Petter Elgh, chairman of Uppsala Technological and Natural Sciences Association, UTN.

Worst for international students

He believes that the unions and the nations are allowed to work with temporary solutions for the new students.

- What we do in the first few weeks is that our sponsors offer a bed or sofa to sleep on. The hardest hit are the international students who do not have a housing guarantee. They don't know how to get hold of housing, says Petter Elgh.

He thinks it is positive that the nations build housing in the May clock and on the Student Road, but that it is not enough.

- I definitely think the municipality can do more. They have well built 2,000 new homes in recent years.

Believe in more corridor rooms

Petter Elgh believes that more corridor rooms would be a good solution for the new students.

- More ones are being built. They are more expensive and more popular. People want to live themselves, but corridor rooms are still needed for the new students.
