by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 26 August 2019A giant pine tree collapsed inside a park while dozens of people, families and children had gathered to celebrate two birthdays.

The incident happened, around 7:30 pm, inside the Parodi di Sant'Andrea Park on the coast of Quartu Sant'Elena, in the area of the metropolitan city of Cagliari.

Four minors were transported to the hospital, not in serious condition, and the father of one of the two-year-old children was also bruised. The father covered the child with the body to prevent it from being reached by the branches of the tree.

It is not clear what exactly happened and why the tree suddenly uprooted itself, sliced clean, breaking down on who was below. There were scenes of panic and terror with children and parents fleeing away. A woman is in a state of shock.

On the spot arrived the 118 ambulances, the Fire Department, the Carabinieri, the Quartu municipal police and the technicians of the Municipality. The wounded were transported to various city hospitals, the whole area was cordoned off.

In the town there was no wind and, apart from a brief shower in recent days, in Quartu Sant'Elena it did not rain, so the reasons for the collapse of the pine are not known. Perhaps the tree was sick.
