In the UK, Heathrow Airport will be the first to introduce the new 3D equipment that can more efficiently respond to unauthorized substances in the luggage.

The new scanner "sees" through the suitcase what kind of liquid is present and can also give a clearer picture of all the contents in the luggage. The staff can zoom in and rotate the 3D image for safer assessment.

No need to lift the computer

This eliminates the need to remove laptops and hygiene items from their hand luggage for a separate examination at the security check.

In the UK, there is a national decision to introduce modern technology at all major airports by 2022 to strengthen the country's position as a global hub for trade and tourism, according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The technology is also being introduced in the US.

But in Sweden there is no decision yet.

"Big investments"

- We are now analyzing which of our airports could introduce the new 3D technology, but it is a big investment, says Mats Paulsson, security director at Swedavia, who owns and operates ten of Sweden's airports.

- The new technology gives staff the opportunity for more secure assessments. It will also be smoother and a better experience for the traveler, Mats Paulsson tells SVT News.

Faster body scanning

The technology is now being introduced at several airports in Europe, including Geneva and Shiphol in Amsterdam. There, you also want to invest in faster body scanning equipment to avoid manual examinations and save time.
