Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that a summit bringing together the Ukrainian, Russian, German and French leaders will be held in September to advance peace in Ukraine.

The meeting was supported by the G7 countries which, after the Biarritz summit, have declared that France and Germany "will hold a summit in Normandy format in the coming weeks in order to obtain results. concrete ".

"The conditions are ripe for a useful summit", also estimated the French president in the final press conference.

He said that a date would be set with Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin and the new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for this meeting, which should be held in France.

Zelensky has repeatedly stated his willingness to improve relations with Russia.

Since April 2014, about 13,000 people have died in eastern Ukraine, where a conflict with pro-Russian separatists has erupted after the popular Maidan uprising that led to the departure of a pro-Russian government in Kiev, followed by the annexation of the Ukrainian Peninsula of Crimea by Moscow.

Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Russia of militarily supporting the separatists of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which it has always denied, despite ample evidence. After the Minsk II agreements in February 2015, the fighting has decreased in intensity but continues to cause casualties.
