Former President Omar al-Bashir was appearing on Saturday, August 24 for the second time in court. The man who was deposed by the army last April is facing corruption charges. His lawyer called for his release on bail.

Dressed in a traditional white dress and locked in a metal cage, Omar al-Bashir appeared for the second time . He did not speak for the entire audience.

The judge heard from three witnesses, including two investigators who searched the residence of the former leader, where large sums of money were found.

Omar al-Bashir compared for possession of foreign currency, corruption and trading in influence. According to an investigator, he has also acknowledged receiving nearly 80 million euros in cash from Saudi Arabia.

Protesters in court

At the end of the hearing, the defense requested his release on bail. The judge indicated that he would review it and set the next hearing on August 31.

Outside the court, several hundred protesters rallied, some demanding that Bashir be tried for other crimes, including his role in the Darfur conflict.

But there was also a small group coming to support the one he still considers as the legitimate president of the country.
