The Guinness Book of Records recorded the participation of 882 people dancing to the rhythm of mariachi music Saturday in the Mexican city of Guadalajara (west), the largest folk dance in the world.

This new record was set in the context of the International Mariachi Meeting in Guadalajara, where the previous feat was also held in 2011, with 457 participants.

"Two very important aspects were studied: first, that all the participants dance at least five minutes without interruption and without leaving the test area, then that they follow a choreography." To this we added the costumes " said Carlos Tapia, representative of the Guinness Book of Records.

The dancers, mostly from folk dance schools, met under the intense rays of the sun, Liberation Square in the center of Guadalajara, capital of the state of Jalisco.

"The previous record was also ours, which shows the continued dissemination of our traditions to young people," Xavier Orendain, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Guadalajara, organizer of the event, told the press.

The men danced on mariachi songs wearing the traditional "charro" costumes (used for the charreria, a sporting practice of Mexican cattle ranching communities dating back to the 16th century), with Mexican embroideries, hats and hats. boots. The women wore multicolored dresses and their hairstyles were intertwined with ribbons.

"For me, it's impressive to see so much coordination and all the expression of the Mexican culture, it's the best," Karla Gallardo, 24, a spectator at AFP, told AFP. the event and also a member of a folkloric group.

The Guadalajara International Mariachi Encounter thus counts 11 exploits in the Guinness Book of Records.
