After the arrival of leaders on the Basque coast on Saturday, the G7 Biarritz gets into the thick of things on Sunday, with the first thematic meetings between heads of state. Saturday evening, at dinner, several major topics have already been discussed.
Three main topics on the menu
At the G7 table, between the piperade and a selection of Basque cheeses, three major topics were discussed. According to the Elysee, much of this dinner in camera was devoted to the Amazon. The seven leaders said they were ready to support efforts to fight the fire.
The Iranian question was also discussed, as was the situation in Ukraine and relations with Russia. The potential return of the country in a G8 was debated, but the outcome of these discussions remains secret for the time being. "On all these subjects, points of convergence have been cleared", nevertheless explained a close adviser to Emmanuel Macron in the night from Saturday to Sunday. A satisfecit posted on the bottom as on the form.
Between the leaders, "the debate was rich"
In all, the dinner lasted three hours, twice as long as expected. "The debate was rich", confided in the night a Japanese Sherpa. Is this a good omen for the success of this G7? In a tweet late in the evening, Donald Trump said the dinner went very well and some progress has already been made.
On Sunday, the discussions will get to the heart of the matter with the working sessions of G7 leaders and African partners. Bilateral interviews are also organized, as at every G7, and leaders will pose for a family photo before dinner.
