Prince Andrew of England said on Saturday that he never saw or suspected any sexual offense during the time his friendship with the US financier Jeffrey Epstein lasted.

"During the limited time I spent with him (Epstein), I never witnessed or suspected any behavior of nature that has led to his arrest," said the second son of Isabel II in a statement from Buckhingham Palace. The prince has acknowledged that it was a "mistake" to meet Epstein after leaving prison in 2010.

He explains that he met Epstein in 1999 and that he later saw him "irregularly and probably not more than once or twice a year" , indicating that he had also stayed in "several of his residences".

He also reaffirms his "regret" for having seen Epstein after the American left prison in 2010. He had been convicted in 2008 of child trafficking in Florida.

Accused of sexual assault of minors, the tycoon was again arrested and charged in early July for organizing for several years a network of dozens of girls under his influence, with whom he had sex in several of his many residences, especially in the Manhattan and Florida

Epstein was found dead on August 10 in his New York cell, the autopsy results confirmed a suicide by hanging.

"His suicide leaves many questions unanswered," says Prince Andrew expressing his "compassion to all those affected by his actions and his attitude." "This is a difficult time for everyone involved and I cannot understand or explain Mr. Epstein's lifestyle, I regret the exploitation of any human being and I would not tolerate, participate or encourage such behavior," he concludes.
