A Spanish tourist has died in Indonesia after being hit by the propeller of a boat on a beach on the island of Weh , at the western end of the archipelago, official sources reported today.

The accident took place on Thursday afternoon, when Francisco Javier García, a 53-year-old from Madrid , swam near Iboih Beach in northwestern Weh, the head of the Police criminal investigation unit told EFE Island, Abdul Halim.

The pilot of the boat, a 39-year-old Indonesian who was going to pick up another tourist, stopped and took the Spanish out of the water with the help of another Indonesian who was sailing near the place, and they both transferred him to the nearest dock.

On land, the Spanish citizen, who was traveling with his wife and two children, was treated by another foreign tourist but died in the ambulance on the way to the Iboih clinic due to the loss of blood caused by the wound on his left side.

Halim said the body will be transferred on Saturday afternoon to the island of Bali, in the center of the archipelago, and from there it will be repatriated to Spain.

Indonesian police are investigating the accident and, for the moment, have not filed charges against the pilot of the vessel.

The island of Weh, also known as Sabang and located northwest of the island of Sumatra, is part of the province of Aceh, the only one in Indonesia that is governed under Islamic law , and a popular tourist destination where the "sharia" is apply more laxity.
