At least five people died in the mysterious explosion, which occurred at a Russian military testing facility in the White Sea in early August. Six other people were injured. According to Russian officials, the accident occurred during a robot test with "isotope fuel sources", but exactly what has happened is unclear and there has been a lot of speculation.

However, what can be noted is that the radiation levels rose sharply in the Russian city of Severodvinsk after the explosion. There, levels up to 16 times the normal were recorded. It was later revealed that four stations measuring radiation in Russia stopped reporting data shortly after the explosion.

The military did not warn

Two doctors in Arkhangelsk are now anonymously telling the Russian BBC about the concerns of hospital staff. According to them, at least 90 people came into contact with people who died in the explosion - but the military had not warned them of exposure to radioactive substances.

The doctors were at another hospital in the city, which received and cared for three of the injured.

Received other patients

When the injured people came to the emergency room, it was obvious that they were very ill, the doctors say. But it was only an hour later that they realized that "they had been exposed to a very high dose of radiation". Meanwhile, the emergency room had continued to receive other patients.

Doctors tell the BBC that they are scared of their own health and that they are now choosing to tell about the incident because they do not want something similar to happen again.

- We do not want them to take three, maybe next time ten people, God forbid, and hide the information for us again, says one of them.
