More than half of the fires have erupted in the Amazon region, called the Lungs of the Planet, which conservationists say is key to preventing climate change.

Brazil experienced 72,843 fires in private lands, protected areas and indigenous reserves between January and August 19.

Most of the fires occurred in the Amazon (13,682) in the southern state of Mato Grosso.
