Emmanuel Macron receives this Friday, August 23, the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif in Paris. They will discuss the sensitive Iranian nuclear issue just before the G7 summit in Biarritz. Since the United States came out of the nuclear deal last year and reinstated heavy sanctions against Iran, the Europeans and especially France are trying to position themselves to save the deal.

The meeting, scheduled for the morning, will allow to " propose things " in an attempt to bring Teheran to the respect of the agreement, already weakened by the American withdrawal, said Emmanuel Macron, who also raised the issue with his counterpart this week in a phone interview.

An explosive file

This explosive issue, which threatens to ignite the Middle East, will then be on the table of leaders of the G7, the club of the seven most industrialized countries, which opens Saturday, August 24 in Biarritz in southwestern France .

" This is an important meeting in the sense that since the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreements, all European countries have been trying to find a role, to to these agreements. So, I think it's mainly around the ways of circumventing sanctions that the meeting will take place, that is to say, a company called Intex, which is supposed to be there to get around the dollar in exchanges, and therefore not contravene US sanctions while allowing to exchange with Iran, "said Amelie Chelly, a sociologist specializing in Iran.

Optimism

The academic is also rather optimistic about this meeting between Macron and Zarif. " Following the US withdrawal of the nuclear agreements, the thing everyone expected was that Iran also withdraw from the agreements and resume uranium enrichment and renuclearization of the country, or even that the country comes out of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. What did not happen? So, this is eventually what would allow us to be positive in the context of this meeting, "she says.

Iran's role in the war in Syria should also be discussed at this meeting. Tehran recently unveiled a new air defense system and reaffirmed its status as a regional power by taking part in the conflict, which is causing serious tensions in the Middle East.
