It is Siren News Agency that compares how it looks with the sale of emergency contraceptive pills in the country. The comparison is about the number of daily doses per thousand inhabitants. In Kalmar County, 17 doses per thousand inhabitants were sold, in Kronoberg County 21 doses per 1000 inhabitants and in Stockholm 37 doses per 1000 inhabitants.

But Kalmar County not only differs when it comes to the use of emergency contraceptives, but also goes against the trend in the state, which shows that it is becoming more common with emergency contraceptives. According to the E-health authority, from which the News Agency Siren retrieved the data, usage has increased by 14 percent over the past ten years, but in Kalmar County it has decreased by about the same amount during the same period.

There are several factors that explain the regional differences. Kajsa Hagstrand, a midwife at RFSU, says it can be about attitude, access to other types of birth control and how people protect themselves and thus the need for emergency contraceptive pills.

- Another factor that also plays into and can affect the differences between the counties is that you meet more people in a big city, says Kajsa Hagstrand to the News Agency Siren.
