GSOMIA Continuation or Discard Korea 22nd August 11:50

Korea ’s Presidential Office will hold an NSC = National Security Conference on the afternoon of the 22nd on the agreement for sharing and protecting confidential information on security between Japan and South Korea = “GSOMIA”. Indicates whether to continue the agreement in the evening.

Cheong Wa Dae will hold a standing committee of the NSC = National Security Council on the afternoon of the 22nd to discuss the agreement “GSOMIA” for sharing and protecting the security information of both countries.

This agreement is extended every year, but if either of them is notified by August 24 every year, the agreement can be destroyed.

The deadline for automatic renewal is approaching on the 24th, and after the consultation of the NSC, the Korean government will decide whether to continue the agreement as early as the evening of the 22nd.

Regarding this agreement, Korean newspapers on the morning of the 22nd have reported extensively, and while there is an opinion that it is necessary to continue the agreement in order to emphasize cooperation with Japan and the United States, there is a relationship over export control in Japan. Some say they should exchange sensitive military information as it gets worse.

It also conveys the view that there is a possibility of a “conditional extension of the agreement” that limits the information shared while the agreement continues. Regarding this agreement, the Japanese side has been calling for continuation so far, and the Korean side's judgment will attract attention.
