21 August 2019Less guarantees for illegally immigrated children, no flu vaccine and attack on one of the United States cornerstones: ius soli. Donald Trump relaunches the battle on the "purity" of America with three interventions that make people talk.

The US administration has developed a new law authorizing the permanent detention of migrant families with children illegally crossing the border. So far the maximum term was twenty days. The provision, unveiled by the interim Minister for Internal Security, Kevin McAleenan, aims to counter the arrival of families with children.

"Entering with the family - the minister explained - is equivalent to a free entrance ticket for the United States. The child is the ticket, the passport". Until now, families remained in detention centers no more than twenty days in case the minors had not been housed in facilities recognized by the government. But the emergency has exhausted the available places. In Texas there is no more willingness to welcome children. Trump wants to remove this time limit to discourage entire families from crossing the border. At the same time, a rule is to authorize any structure to accommodate children, without considering the standards of services and personnel. The law, to enter into force, must be approved by a federal judge.

The hard line on immigrant children does not end there: the US government will not vaccinate children detained in centers on the border with Mexico against the flu. This was announced by the Border Security Service, explaining that given the short terms of stay in the centers, children cannot follow the vaccination program. But if the permanence becomes permanent? The department did not clarify, generating alarm among the experts, precisely on the eve of the vaccination period, September and October, on the eve of the flu period. It is another sign, after the squeeze on legal immigrants who will have their right to residence removed if they have had access to government funds.

But Trump wants to bring down another historic American institution: the ius soli, the right to citizenship for those born in the United States and the son of illegal immigrants. The Ius Soli is part of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and is considered one of the key principles for Americans. "We are seriously considering removing it - the president explained, speaking to journalists - this right is a ridiculous thing".
