Sudan has taken a major step in the transition towards civilian rule by swearing in the president and members of the sovereign council that will govern the country during a 39-month transitional period, sworn in, pending the swearing-in of the prime minister later.

In detail, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Fattah al-Burhan, who headed the junta, swore an oath in his spotted green uniform, holding his hand over the Koran, the president of the sovereign council, in a brief ceremony.

Subsequently, the other 10 members of the Council took the oath before Burhan and the President of the Judicial Council.

The official Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) published pictures of the council members during the swearing-in, showing the proof and the head of the judiciary, Abay Ali Babiker.

The names of the members of the Sovereign Council were announced last night after two days delay due to disputes within the camp of the protest movement.

The proof will be president for the first 21 months of the transition, with Madani assuming the remainder.

The Sovereign Council includes two women, including a representative of the Christian minority in the country, and will oversee the formation of the government and the Transitional Legislative Council. It consists of six civilians and five military personnel.

According to the decree of the sovereign council to be composed of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan as president, Mohammed Hamdeen Dqlo «Hamidi» and Yasser al-Atta and Shams al-Din Kabbashi and Jaber Ibrahim (list of military in the Council of Sovereignty), as well as representatives of the forces of the Declaration of «freedom and change».

The Sovereign Council will replace the Transitional Military Council, which took power following the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir by the army on April 6, following mass demonstrations that lasted five months. The first steps of the transition come after major celebrations that coincided with the signing of a transitional constitutional document by the military council and the protest movement demanding civilian rule on August 17.

The members of the new Sudanese sovereign council, revealed some of the decisions and ideas issued from their first meeting, at a press conference for representatives of «freedom and change», yesterday.

Mohammed al-Faki, a member of the Sudanese sovereign council, confirmed that the issue of the chairman of the judiciary council and the prosecutor general had been postponed for a later time.

He also pointed out that the new Prime Minister, who will be appointed later, will take over the urgent files awaiting him, especially after a large period of emptiness.

"The Sovereign Council is the culmination of the people's quest for equality and justice," said Aisha Musa, a member of the council.

Moussa vowed to pursue democratic transformation and promised the Sudanese people to contribute to bringing Sudan to safety.

It is scheduled to start Sudan, during the month of September, the first meeting between the Council of Sovereignty and Ministers.
