German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was possible to reach a "negotiated deal" for Britain's exit from the EU in the "30 days" bypassing the deadlock around the "safety net" mechanism, receiving Wednesday its counterpart British Boris Johnson.

This controversial mechanism has so far been designed as an insurance policy until the UK and the 27 find a way to define their future relationship within two years. "But maybe we can do it in the next 30 days, why not?" and then the safety net would be useless, Merkel said, calling for "efforts to achieve this".
