SVT Nyheter Småland this spring told about people who repeatedly drove drunk on the roads in Småland. Then we told that the work with the so-called Smadit method should be resumed and on Tuesday an agreement was signed between various actors in Kalmar and Kronoberg County to resume the work.

Smadit, who stands for Collaboration against alcohol and drugs in traffic, assumes that a person who has been reported for drunk driving should be offered help from the health care, preferably within 24 hours as the person is then more receptive to the offer of help.

- The goal is for it to happen within 24 hours, the method is built on it. But it may happen that it will be the next weekday, so during the weekend a person can wait longer, says Anna Ståhl, who is ANDT coordinator at the County Administrative Board in Kronoberg.

- It's an offer to the person who can say no, says Anna Ståhl.

A new start

The way of working has been around since 2004 and works differently around the country. After the work in Kalmar and Kronoberg counties lost momentum, it should now resume.

"The work ended up a bit on ice, but now we have a better structure and it is also a priority work where we also have different collaboration meetings a couple of times a year," says Olof Emilsson, ANDT coordinator at the County Administrative Board in Kronoberg.

The goal is to reduce road safety and reduce the number of drunk driving incidents.
