In a solemn address to the Senate, Italian Council President Giuseppe Conte announced that he would resign to President Sergio Mattarella. He accused his Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of being " irresponsible " by triggering the government crisis that has shaken the country since the beginning of August.

Italian Council President Giuseppe Conte announced Tuesday his intention to resign after the parliamentary debate following his speech to the Senate, where he delivered a very harsh speech against Matteo Salvini.

" I interrupt here this experience of government. I intend to conclude this institutional passage in a coherent way. I will go see the President of the Republic to present my resignation, "said Mr. Conte, pointing out that before he would listen to the parliamentary debate scheduled.

The president of the Italian Council accused his Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of being " irresponsible ". The prime minister criticizes his interior minister for preventing the adoption of the Italian budget for the year 2020.

The head of government has accused the one who is also his Deputy Prime Minister to " run serious risks to our country, " including the danger of a negative economic spiral. He also said that Italy is weakened in its negotiations with the European Union following this crisis.

Italy in the middle of economic slump

This resignation comes in a complicated economic context for Italy. The third economy in the euro zone is idling. GDP growth was flat in the first six months of the year and some experts anticipate a recession for the whole year.

Unemployment, which is around 10% of the active population, should therefore increase. Italy also has a huge debt, amounting to 134% of its GDP. And when the country wants to borrow on the bond market, it pays more interest than its neighbors.
