- Gibraltar: Iranian oil tanker ordered release despite US blockade attempt
Iran has warned the United States on Monday against the capture of the Iranian oil tanker that sailed from Gibraltar Sunday, where it had been held since July 4. "Iran has sent the necessary warnings to US officials through official channels" of "not making such a mistake because it would have serious consequences," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Musavi told reporters.
The tanker, immobilized since July 4 in Gibraltar, lifted the anchor on Sunday night and sailed south, according to the Marine Traffic marine traffic monitoring site. The Gibraltar authorities did not confirm his departure and he still did not know what his destiny was and that of his cargo.
Gibraltar had ordered the arrest of the ship, suspected of transporting oil to Syria, in application of European sanctions against the country at war. The tanker was authorized to leave once he had guaranteed that the cargo would not be delivered to Syria.
The former Grace 1 , with a Panamanian flag, was renamed Adrian Darya , this time with an Iranian flag.
The retention of the tanker by Gibraltar and the British navy caused a major diplomatic crisis between Tehran and London. Iran responded by retaining three other tankers, including one with a British flag, on July 19, although it has always denied that it was a retaliatory measure.
Despite the release of Adrian Darya, the Iranian Government has assured Monday that British Stena Impero will continue to be held in Iran for the duration of the judicial process.
