The Nigerian Electoral Commission has unveiled the schedule for the upcoming elections. Presidential and legislative elections will be held on December 27, 2020, a few weeks after the municipal and regional elections to be held on November 1.

Initially set for May 9, 2016, municipal and regional will finally take place at the end of 2020. The stakes are high because for three years, these polls have been postponed several times because of the rainy season, or the need to elaborate an electoral register, according to the authorities.

Since 2016, the mandates of the local elected representatives, who have expired, are thus extended every six months by the government, so that the institutions can function.

Respected calendar however for the presidential and legislative with a first round on December 27, 2020 and a second start in 2021. The main presidential candidates are already identified. Interior Minister Mohamed Bazoum will represent the ruling party, with President Issoufou pledging not to run again for a third term .

On the opposition side, Hama Amadou, in exile, was nominated early August by the Nigerian Democratic Movement (Moden), the main opposition party. Sentenced to one year in prison in a case of international trafficking of babies, he could be removed from the race. From the beginning, Hama Amadou denounces a political trial.
