“We need to re-open our relations with Russia, without waiting for Trump, who, if re-elected, will re-launch the dynamics (in relations. - RT ) between the US and Russia, not taking into account the interests of Europe,” Vedrin said in an interview with Figaro.

According to him, it is necessary to “connect Russia with Europe” again and correct the situation that has developed due to inconsistent Western policies, which has pushed Russia toward rapprochement with China.

“We need to restore, starting from scratch, the policy of arms control and balanced disarmament,” the former minister emphasized.

He also recalled the importance of cooperation between Russia and France in the military, nuclear, space and digital spheres, as well as in the fight against international terrorism.

Vedrin praised the upcoming meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in France on the eve of the G7 summit.

“This is a very useful attempt to get France and, if possible, Europe out of a hopeless situation, out of a vain war of positions that has been waged for many years,” he said.

Earlier, the assistant to the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov said that Putin and Macron during the meeting on August 19 plan to discuss international issues, European security issues, as well as the situation in Ukraine.
