British Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn proposes to head an interim government to prevent a Brexit without a deal on October 31, 2019. Oli SCARFF / AFP

The leader of the British Labor Party volunteered to head an interim government if the situation allowed. A group of deputies are organizing to prevent a Brexit without agreement and thus try to dismiss the government of Boris Johnson, if it came to force a hard divorce. The Constitution of the United Kingdom wants that in case of dismissal a new interim government be appointed.

Boris Johnson has a problem of parliamentary arithmetic. Since the by-election when his Conservative party suffered its first electoral setback in favor of the Liberal Democratic Party, it became clear that Parliament's stage would be very complicated for the government. The Tories have only a technical majority of a single seat, which strongly weakens the Prime Minister.

In an attempt to block a Brexit without an agreement promised by the head of the government, the opposition led by Labor is preparing to hold a vote of no confidence at the start of the parliamentary term. A vote that could push Boris Johnson to resign in case of failure. An interim government would then be set up and legislative elections would be organized.

The leader of Labor, Jeremy Corbyn then presented himself as a last resort to prevent a Brexit without agreement and to take the lead of this interim government. But the leader of Labor, which is not unanimous even within his own party, did not receive the approval of the liberal-democratic Jo Swinson. The latter suggested in its place the former Labor Vice-Chancellor Harriet Harman or former Chancellor Ken Clarke, who said he was not against the idea of becoming an acting Prime Minister.
