The number of air travelers who chose to fly to and from Visby in July is the lowest in five years. Last year 83,400 traveled to and from Gotland during this month. This year the figure is 69,800, a decrease of 16 percent.

- Partly the general week was smaller this year and partly so we have not had any traffic to Oslo this season, says Gunnar Jonasson, manager of Swedavia Visby Airport.

"Flying comb" may be behind

It is not only in Visby that travel decreases. Statistics from Swedavia show that total air travel seems to be declining in the country. If you compare the period January to July last year with this year, domestic travel has decreased by eight percent. Part of the reason is environmental considerations and the debate about flying combs. That's what Tina Wolfgang thinks, who just arrived with a flight to Visby.

- Absolutely. It is clear that you are thinking about it. But sometimes you choose it anyway, she says, explaining that she took the flight because she needed to get to Gotland quickly. Per Jonsson who came with the same flight is in the same line. He started his journey in Umeå.

- I would definitely have been able to take a transport that took longer, but I feel that the time gain I make is so great. Since then, I don't fly that much else during the year, he says.

Works to be more environmentally friendly

Gunnar Jonasson also believes that flight comb is behind part of the loss. But the airline will become more and more environmentally friendly, he says.

- A lot of work is being done to obtain biofuel fuel and within maybe five years, we also see that electric aircraft are starting to enter domestic aviation. So it looks good and the flight must continue to work for sustainable travel, he says.
